You can display hyperlinks on a page, to do this create a page in SharePoint designer and drag your document library onto your page.
Go to the title of the document and you'll see a little glif (an arrow on the right hand side), change the type to a hyperlink and it will come up with a hyperlink button. What you do next is to get the @fileref ...

If you have someone who deals with the back end databases, this should be the fix. You need to check if remote connections are allowed and you do this through surface area config.

Have you changed the Server Surface Area config in SQL Server? Try this:
Select Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration
