Thank you for pointing me to this.  I am just reviewing this code on Codeplex to see how it all bolts together. It may be possible to adapt this control to look at lists from other site collections.  If I get that far I will post back to this thread.

Is it possible to add a lookup column to a list that only allows you to select items within a certain view? Essentially I have a list with 2000 ish items, but I am only after a particular content type within that list (of which there are only several hundred items), when I open the new form using a standard lookup field this returns all items ...
