Yeah, we get requests of this type a few times a year.
If you can restrict the format down to 1, your job will be much, much easier. The company I work for (Deltascheme) did a solution for a customer that did take arbitrary document/image formats and stitch them all together - and it worked, but the formatting wasn't always ... pretty. And I doubt

Bit of a long shot, but have you tried just using the .add() method and setting the GUID after the object has been created.
(I know, it shouldn't work that way - but some bits of this API are messed up)
Looking in reflector, it appears that the the Constructor for the SPEventReceiverDefinition defaults to GUID.Empty for it's values, then sets ...

The problem is that a lot of publishing page layouts hide the page title (and even the default breadcrumbs). Hmm. So code behind for User controls is okay? I've been doing some tests, and it seems okay to me - so why is everyone compiling assemblies or doing inline ASCX controls?

How about:- Hide the list itself from your quicknav- Create a new page- drop a ListView webpart onto the page- Set up the view you want.
