MySite link back to Home / Portal site - MySiteView=1 problem

    Hi,
This problem was bugging me for a while until I accidentally stumbled on a fix.

Essentially the problem is when you view a MySite, you don't get a link back to your Portal site.  Easy enough to add a link in SharedServices1 > Personalization site links.  Except that when you click and return to your Portal, the menu has retained the MySite navigation because the URL contains "?MySiteView=1".

The solution (as per link) is to add a # on the end of the URL you enter, this makes the rest of the link an anchor so SP will ignore it and display your normal menu.

Nice post , excellent information. Lots of people will benefit from this who use My Sites. The other obvious way to do this is to add the connection to portal option in the site settings for the my site. This could be done automatically if you change the default template prior to any sites being created.

Yeah I hope so (people finding it useful),  I haven't used a template, i simply override the css but i know what you mean, good method if users MySite aren't created yet I think?.

The other MySite problem that i'm having is : if you view another users MySite page, it doesn't have a menu or retain the link back to the Portal.  Not sure if this is something i've done with my custom css or a feature of SP.

    Steve - I've been singing your praises here - http://suguk.org/forums/thread/6880.aspx - but you're ok, i don't want any shorts.  ;¬)

Thats one advantage of using the connection to portal in the site settings is that every My Site will have that breadcrumb back to the portal home but yes for new sites it can be part of the template for existing my sites they will need to add the setting manually. Although this can be done by the Admin by going to the profiles , view user profiles , manage my site link which takes you to the site settings page for that users My Site.

Also thanks for the praise , we do appreciate it. A lot of work goes into writing the SharePoint courses although we always feel there is room to improve them. Our 2007 Administrator Course is now on Revision 8 since the Beta in July 2006. Can't believe we still find the odd typo though !! the funny part is that it wasn't a typo in the earlier revision. Keeps me smiling though :)

    Adam,

Ran into the same issue you did when trying to use the # on the end of the URL. It actually does work, but you have to format it a certain way. In your Personalization site links page you have to use this format for it to work:

    http://<portalname>/#

So for you, you'd need to put http://saber/# and you'll be good to go.
