    Word template vs Infopath form

    Hi
After attending the SPUG in Manchester (17/7) I am trying to replicate what Alex Pearce did with a few tweaks. I've created site columns & an invoice content type with an invoice template attached and set up an invoices doc library that only creates new invoices based on the template.

In Alex's example he inputted amount, vat total etc and used quick parts to insert them into the doc template. I want vat & total to be calculated, so set up calculated site columns but they dont show up in at the top when you create a new doc. So I added calculations to the doc template and an activex control button to update the calculations each time.

However when I create a new doc from my sharepoint libarary the control button doesnt work.

My questions is - is there a simple answer to make the activex button work or am I flogging a dead horse? Would infoapth be a better option - I've never used it so have no idea.

Thanks for any help you can give me

Sorry about the delay, and I'll add my input for what it's worth.

InfoPath will undoubtedly give you the capability you are looking for as you can add conditionality to forms and fields, such that when a field value changes, it recalcs other information and values in other fields etc, You can also add a 'Re-Calc' button and other buttons to effect change, send emails, set flags (so that when the document hits the SP list it can use either SP Designer or Visual Studio Workflows as well), switch layout forms, save the document etc etc. InfoPath is a very capable solution, and does allow for a much better input format, layout and presentation of material.

An Active control button in Word, in fact many other features in Word will allow you to create some of the same capabilities as available in InfoPath, however if you have InfoPath Filler (or the Forms Server functionality) available to you on the Server, I'd opt for that every time.

If you have any other questions of a general nature about InfoPath, please feel free to ask.

    Regards, and hope this helps.

How did you get on looking at InfoPath?  If you need some working examples of it, and would like a quick walk around the product I'd be happy to provide a web-demo if that would be useful?
