Controlling the 'From' email address in Workflow emails

I know that OOB you cannot change the 'From' email address in a Workflow without affecting every email Sharepoint sends. However, I'm wondering if there are any workarounds or tricks that can workaround this. It's seriously hampering what I can offer as a Sharepoint solution here.
What I'd like to do is use a Column value from a List as the From field in the email. Are there any solutions out there for Moss 2007?

Re: Controlling the 'From' email address in Workflow emails

There's a good reason for it. The email wouldn't be from the "fake" address at all, it's still from SharePoint.

There's no way around it through standard settings if you're going to stick with all the Workflow plumbing that comes with SharePoint Designer but you could override it with custom Workflows built with Visual Studio.

Failing that, you could also look at building custom message receive handlers in Exchange and swap out the "from" address based on some email flags.

Re: Controlling the 'From' email address in Workflow emails

Other than the outgoing message settings, it is possible to specify a custom mailbox address per web application.

Not sure if that helps you with what you want to do, but expands on what is generally (incorrectly) perceived to be a fixed mail address within one setting in Central Administration.
