    Moving Columns between Content Types

    Hi

I have taken over on a site created by someone else.     He created a number of list columns which I still need but I would like to organise them on appropriate Content Types.    Is there a way to move these columns to my new Content Types?

My workaround at present is to:

    • define a column in my new content type with the same name as an existing column
    • modifying my view to display this new column next to old columns
    • use the datasheet view to copy data to my new column
    • delete the original column.
    • modify my view to show new column

I'm sure there must be an easier way.

    Thanks in advance

    Brian

    Hi Brian,

When you talk about moving the columns are you talking about moving the columns and their data into a new content type? or just moving the column itself from an old content type into the new content type?

I'm guessing from your example, it's probably the data you want to move. If this is the case, then I'm afraid no, you'll have to copy the data across into the content type column as you are doing.

It might be worth looking at using excel to extract the data, set-up a new list and then pump the data back in. might be quicker and more controllable than copy paste...

    Paul.
