    Changing column linked to item?

Hi, I have a list with a number of columns one of the columns is linked to the item. How can I add this facility to other columns, either, as well as the original column (but still keeping the column), or instead of? Also is it possible to change a column type from single line to choice after it is created?
    Thanks in advance.

    Najm,

I think I understand what you are getting at.  You want to add a column that looks up from another columns list items?  If I have understood correctly you need to:

    1.  Open thelist in question

    2. Modify the settings and columns

    3. Add a new column, and choose lookup as the column type.

    4. REference the same list and choose the column name.

Yes it is also possible to change a single text item to a choice column.  If you just click the column to edit it whilst in settings.  Not sure if it can be a lookup though.  If not, delete it and add a new one.  If you already have data, then export it to a spreadsheet first!

    Hope this helps.

Re: Changing column linked to item?

Hi Bret, thanks for the reply.
I'm sorry for my poor explanation of the problem. Actually, the problem is I have a list, the first column of which is called "Country", it is of type "single line of text". Also, when the country name is clicked the (what I would call) details page opens. In the settings - edit view - all items page the country column is labelled "Country (linked to item with edit menu) "

Since creating the list I have been asked to change the input field for country from "single line of text" to "choice" so that the user is offered the country names in a dropdown menu when adding new entries.

I wanted to either change the current country type from single line to choice or create a new column applying the choice option.

To change the input type of the original column I went to Modify Settings and Columns and clicked on the column name Country to edit it... this gave me the change column page for Country but there is nowhere on the page that allows me to change the type from "single line" to "choice"

I tried therefore to create a new column with the choice value... after doing this I was unable to then give the column the ability to open the item in the same way that the original Country column did... obviously this is important if it to replace the original column.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Regards,
    Najm

... hmm it seems that I can change type from single line to choice on the other columns but not on the country column... could that be becuase it is linked to the item?

'yes, I would guess so.  Could you delete that column and add your own?

Re: Changing column linked to item?

Yes, I have the column that links to the items as one that uses a single line type and the country column which needs a drop down is now not linked and works fine. As I use the country names in various lists I have created one list with all the country names and then in the other lists I can populate the drop-down  menu using the "choice" type .

hi, perhaps you can help with a similar need. I want to populate a field with 'country code', which is looked up automatically when user chooses country from a another list. the list of course has country code next to each country. thanks
