    SLK Assignments

I am in the process of adding assignments to a SharePoint site with SLK enabled.  I have no problem with doing this and can see the assignment in the My Learning area.

I have a couple of questions however:

Is it feasible or indeed good practice to add a word document as an assignment (ie a non-SCORM 2004 compliant document) into the My Learning area?  If it is then when the student opens the word document, how is this then saved, does it go into their own work area?  If that is the case how is that recalled or is that a case of doing it the old way of the student then prints it off and passes it to the teacher for grading which can then be entered against the students assignment.

Once the work has been graded how does that mark then get back to the student?

How do you all use the SharePoint solution for your students, do you allow them to add work to MOSS? I want students to be able to interact but in the safety of them doing it right and not messing things up.

    Re: SLK Assignments

We also use Word documents as the basis for assignments in SLK.  Students open the document from their Assignment Diary and can then save them locally if need be.  They have to return them either via email or hard copy in the conventional way.

We still use Class Server for interactive assignments, which can be complleted online by the student and returned to the teacher.  Grading the takes plac in SLK and the student receives either the grade or the whole assignment (marked) back.

Although Class Server is a bit clunky, I have not yet found a third party content editor which will allow me to easily create interactive assignments which are SCORM compliant, to unleash on the teaching staff.

I would be interested in knowing about schools who have a facility for student to upload their completed assignments into MOSS for teachers to assess.

    Re: SLK Assignments

Hi Mark, I have a similar situation where i need students to submit their assginments offline (such as Word file).  I am not fimiliar with Class Server / SCORM etc.  I have WSS 3.0 installed with SLK.  I wonder if there is anyway for students to submit their assingments offline (instructor create a assignment, student can download and then after finishing, submit then grading).  I am wondering if this is not possible with SKL then for Assignment Web Part List is not at all useful in my situation as i can create SCORM content?

I will appreciate your guidance on this matter.  Please excuse my lack of subject knowlege.  Thanks,  regards, Sohail

    Re: SLK Assignments

    Hi Sohail,

As far as I know there is no way that a student can return a non SCORM resource via SLK.  That is why we have retained Class Server for now, so that we can create SCORM compliant resources for this purpose where needed.

With your set up at present I wuld say that students will need to save their assignments locally to complete them and then submit by more conventional means.

The alternative is for you to find a resource editor which will create SCORM compliant resiources from your word files etc - there are several out there, although I am still looking for one which seems intuitive for teachers to use.

Have a look at www.the-kraal.com - there are examples of schools work there which may help.

    Re: SLK Assignments

Thanks Mark for your quick reply.   Although I am not expecting heavy usage but at this stage I only need a feature that can accept assignments from students and can be returned to them with comments (even wihtout any grading mechanism).  I am surprise that there aren't any way out.  Do you think that if i don't need proper grading system this particular task could you achieve via document library with some sort of permission (so student will only see their own file instead all the files in the library).  Do you think it is a good idea?

    Many thanks,  Sohail

    Re: SLK Assignments

    Hi Sohail,

I guess that a set of libraries with appropriate permissions for students would work - but unless you have some kind of provisioning tool this would be a huge task. My inclination would be to pursue a SCORM authoring tool, and then SLK will do the work for you - or revert to good old email!

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

    Re: SLK Assignments

Yes one option is a document library with content approval switched on and change settings so students can only see draft items that they have submitted.

Then the teacher never approves those items : just leave the approval state as pending and that way students will be able to see the items that they have submitted but not those from other students.

If you add to the document library some more columns e.g. grade and comment then the teacher can edit the properties of the document to give feedback (or add comments to the document itself.)

Another option worth considering is to email enable the document library (I haven't tried this with students yet!). Then students can email completed document back to for example:

    Maths4set1@sharepoint.schoolname.co.uk

If you choose the option so that the subject becomes the folder name and attachments are put into that folder then you can tell the class the subjects to use in their emails e.g.

Email your completed work as an attachement to Maths4set1@sharepoint.schoolname.co.uk with the subject "Ratio"

    Hope this helps

    Re: SLK Assignments

Dear Paul, as I said i will have questions.  Firstly, i am using WSS not MOSS.  how could i create a document library/custom list so owner will only be able to see it?  for example Student should only be able to see their assignment!

I am not sure but is there any way that i can create a view which can be filtered by CreatedBy ( i will need the current user name?) so the only owner of the item/document will be able to see it.?

    Many thanks, Sohail

My apologies for not doing research before posting but i suppose this could be done by adding [me].  Sohail

    Re: SLK Assignments

Yes that's correct Sohail.  In that way the person posting the file will only see their own.  Make sure you do this to the default view of the library.
