Outsourcery will be providing an overview of Cloud deployed Microsoft Lync and how a combined SharePoint Lync environment dramatically improves user engagement and interaction within SharePoint.

Bill Ayres (MCM) - Lean-Agile SharePoint Development
Agile development practices are sweeping through the software industry – everyone is talking about SCRUM, TDD and CI. But SharePoint is different, right? We'll run through the definitions of SCRUM, Kanban, XP, TDD and the rest. Then we’ll look at how you can build SharePoint solutions using Lean-Agile techniques and get all the benefits – faster development, predictable deliveries, better quality, less stress and happy stakeholders. We’ll look at unit tests, integration tests, UI tests, continuous integration and, of course, test-driven development (TDD) using practical examples. We’ll look at the different techniques and new tooling options as well as the many issues around dealing with subsequent iterations of a project that is already deployed with live content.

Welcome everyone. After a bit of a early summer break (albeit a very wet one) we are back with 2 great sessions that I think you'll all love.

Adam Burcher - Let me script that for you!
This session is going to explore some of the options that PowerShell can offer SharePoint developers. Based on real-world scenarios we'll look at how, as developers, we can use PowerShell to automate and control our SharePoint deployments and configuration.

Alex Pearce - New to SharePoint 2010 for Power Users
During this session we will take a blank site template, enable the correct features, create lists, create content types and a document template with information pulled from the document properties creating an invoice and purchase ordering system, all within 60 minutes.

SharePoint Infrastructure Roles

Hi All,

First of all apologies for creating duplicate forum posts for this, but I urgently need help with this issue, particularly from SharePoint professionals living in the Sheffield area.

I am an MCITP certified Server engineer and would really like to find a role working with SharePoint. I am currently working as a Small Business Engineer in Sheffield and have a strong background in Windows Server, Active Directory, DNS, SharePoint 2007, and Networking. I have previously worked in Microsoft based Enterprise environments.

The problem is most of the jobs I see advertised are for SharePoint Developers with C#/.net skills.

My understanding of SharePoint is that someone needs to design and implement the SharePoint Infrastructure - is this done by SharePoint Developers as part of their roles, or are there dedicated roles to design and implement the Infrastructure. And more importantly, how and where can I find these roles advertised?

My ambition is to work in a role as a SharePoint Architect. I am currently debating whether to gain .net skills to work as a SharePoint Developer, or to build on my core skills and get certified as a SharePoint 2010 MCITP and focus on the SharePoint architecture.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

In this session I am going to discuss many of the areas that a business needs to think about and address when designing SharePoint for the short and Long term. After talking about SharePoint adoption and usability since 2003 it is interesting to discover how different organisations and business have approached this over the years and succeeded or failed.

I am assembling a panel of some of the foremost SharePoint experts in the country who you can come, meet and put to the test with your SharePoint questions.

This is one of my favourite types of session becuase you get to ask them anything you want (as long as it is loosely related to SharePoint!)

The panel will consist of experts such as: Steve Smith, Penny Coventry, Neil Hodgkinson, Nick Swan, Brett Lonsdale, Phil Childs, Mark Macrae and Shaun O'Callaghan... maybe more!

Each members presence is assuming last minute availability as some of the panel are travelling back from overseas trips just before the meeting!

Brett Lonsdale has specialised in the Business Data Catalog since its introduction and has authored the book ‘Developers Guide to the Business Data Catalog for SharePoint 2007’. Brett has also worked very closely with Business Connectivity Services since the early beta of SharePoint 2010. SharePoint, jQuery and AJAX - a beginner's survival guide

It takes a different approach to build SharePoint apps with a slick AJAX experience - getting rid of those nasty postbacks involves declining some help from .Net and learning new techniques. Whilst the answers often lie with the Client Object Model and jQuery, both are hefty topics so the barrier can be intimidating. This talk aims to boil things down to "3 core techniques to survive by", with step by step demos to show the development process. Tips and tricks such as enabling jQuery intellisense, debugging JavaScript and using JSON will be covered. To pull the concepts together, the session will round off with a demo migration of an existing mini-application from postbacks to AJAX. Building custom SharePoint experiences that users love is simpler than you think!

Session 1: Bill Ayres Building fast, low-cost public-facing sites using SharePoint Foundation
It is generally thought that you need the full SharePoint Server product and expensive licences to build a scalable public-facing website.

Whilst SPS offers great value when you consider what you get, the entry cost may be too steep for smaller businesses in the current climate, which may send them down the route of using PHP or custom ASP.NET. But although SharePoint Foundation doesn’t give you the full web content management story, or the caching capabilities, or the slick web parts; you might be surprised at how much you can achieve.

I will show you how you can get started using SharePoint Foundation to host your public website on a shoe-string. I also show how you can keep the option to upgrade to SharePoint Server later, without having to change technologies or upset your hard-won search ranking.

This talk is aimed at IT Professionals and managers within SMEs.

Session 2: James Fisk (@draken) Beginners Guide Continuous Integration for SharePoint 2010 Solutions
How many of you can honestly say you have never deployed code directly from your build machine into live? How many times have you forgotten to check a file into source control only to get a phone call when you’re on holiday asking you where the file is?

In this session I’m going to introduce you to automated builds, looking at how to setup you build scripts and take these and add then to a dedicated build server to give you Continuous Integration (CI).

I am going to use the excellent JetBrains Team City for the demo as this is available free of charge for small teams and walk you from your SharePoint project all the way through to having your automated CI up and running. This session is targeted at anyone involved in SharePoint development, you don’t need to have any previous experience, and is also suitable for project managers and IT pro’s.

How to maximise SharePoint search in your business. This will be focussed around SharePoint 2010, but many of the business considerations can be applied back into your 2007 deployments, and allow you to design your current deployments with the future in mind.

Dave Walmsley
Dave will be talking us through a real life SharePoint case study where they implemented a solution for SJM Concerts, the leading independent UK concert promoter, and manage tours and events such as Take That, Coldplay, Muse and the V-Festival.

Dave will explain how they used a wide range of SharePoint, Out-Of-The Box functionality, such as Document Management, Business Intelligence, Wikis, use of the BDC, and many third party applications to manage and share all information in a targeted way within the company, and with external partners.

The presentation discusses many of the technical and business change challenges that were presented, the successes, the difficulties and some shortcomings of Sharepoint and lessons learnt. Importantly, it also shows how important it is to really understand business processes, site design and the basics of taxonomy before implementing technology, and how far you can get "out-of-the-box".

Since the major focus is pushing SharePoint OOTB as much as possible, there should be a lot of learnings you can take back to your own businesses and projects.

I am very excited to announce a bonus SUGUK meeting to co-incide with Microsoft's Tech Days event.

Microsoft and Combined Knowledge have jointly funded this event, and we will be celebrating both Microsoft's forthcoming Office 2010/SharePoint 2010 releases and also the superb SharePoint Evolutions Conference - held in London the following week.

This will be less formal and more 'festival' as we head to the AMC GREAT NORTHERN for a screening of Clash of the Titans!!

In addition to the feature showing, we will also be hosting an open-mic Ask the Experts session on SharePoint in general before settling down to what I am hoping is going to be a cracking film.

Due to a fantastic response to our first meeting in the North West we have no more space available.

If you have not managed to sign up to this event then please get in early for our next meeting, which is expected to be in January. I will post more details here when they are available.

Welcome to the first Manchester SharePoint User Group meeting arranged under the new organisation of the SharePoint User Group UK.

I have great pleasure in putting this event on with some extremely high profile SharePoint professionals to support the many users in the area.

Due to the close time of this meeting to the SharePoint conference we thought it would be useful to start with a presentation covering what is new in SharePoint 2010.

The second session will be run as an open Q&A session which we hope will allow us to get to know you, the users, and what you want the User Group to offer you in future meetings. You will have the opportunity to tell others about your involvement with SharePoint, which features you are using and to ask questions to our expert panel who are knowledgeable in all versions of SharePoint, past, current and future.

It promises to be a great event with lots of new topics to talk about and we look forward to seeing you there.
