    PC specification

    Hi,

I'm wondering what PC specification the more experienced Sharepoint / MOSS admins / troubleshooters would recommend for a new deployment.

What RAM, Processor and Hard Disk for starters with Sharepoint 2007 / Office 2007 / Outlook / XP Professional SP2 ?

any gotchas concerned would be helpful too

    thanks

    Re: PC specification

    Hi there,

Are you talking for development here or for the actual deployment?

My development machine is an HP dc7700P running twin dual-core processors and 4Gb of memory on Windows 2003 Server std with a 300Gb hard drive. On this server, I have Visual Studio, Sql Express and a local install of our SharePoint environment. In addition, I have office 2003 installed due tot he nature of our user environment.

This box has been imaged using Altiris to enable me to roll back to known images as and when required.

If you're talking about for a full deployment, then I would suggest that your first stop is the sizing tool on the HP website (I think there is a link somewhere in the forums here..) . This will give you suggestions as to what questions you need to ask such as user base, type of users etc.

    Paul.

    Re: PC specification

    Hi, Paul

thanks for your reply. My question is about the specification of new PCs for users, who will get the new machines at the same time as Sharepoint. When we order the new hardware, saving on cost is important so over-specifying is something I wish to avoid. Servers/Farms and development PCs are already in operation, so these are not part of the equation.

    Re: PC specification

    Ah I understand.

Well in my environment, we're mostly running the Office 2003 suite of software, so I'm not using the full integration features that Moss 2007 allows for, however it works quite nicely. I'm personally running both versions of office as we're using web based InfoPath, so these have to be authored in InfoPath 2007, But the users are just running IE6.0 (We're waiting for our SAP implementation to support IE7.0 before we upgrade.)

The basic user machines we have are Laptops running Xp SP2, ranging from 512Mb up to 2Gb, none of which have any major problems with SharePoint usage. The thing to watch for are the users that insist on having 6 word documents open, along with a couple of excel spreadsheets, Outlook in the background and the odd SAP desktop application. A certain amount of user expectation mangement is required in these circumstances as they seem to think that desktop resources are unlimited.

We also have some users running vitual desktops from thin terminals as a proof of concept, These seem to be working quite nicely with a 2.5Ghz processor cap and 1Gb of maximum available memory.

    Paul.
