    Setting default locale for Mysites

     Hi

When users create mysites in MOSS the locale for the site defaults to 'English (United States)'. I need it to default to 'English (United Kingdom)'. I've searched hign and low but I cannot find where this is set. Does anyone know? Am I missing something obvious? (I can change the locale for individual sites once they have been created but it's the default setting I'm looking for).

    Thanks

    Mike

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

Go into the Web Application General Settings (for your MySites Web Application) from Application Management in central Admin and change the time zone.

    Hi Spence

Thanks for the quick reply. I have already set this to the required time zone (GMT). When I create a mysite the time zone is now set correctly but the locale is still set to English (United States). Any ideas?

    Thanks

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

sorry - i forgot the second bit - you then need to go into site settings, regional settings to modify the locale from US.

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

Do you mean the site settings for each individual mysite? I'm trying to avoid every user having to go to their mysite settings to change this.

New mysites that are being created are still set to US. Can they default to UK so that users don't have to change this themselves?

    Thanks

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

Yup. But only for sites that have yet to be created.

Say your My Sites Web Application is hosted at http://my/

add /_layouts/regionalsetng.aspx to the URL so it's http://my/_layouts/regionalsetng.aspx

then configure the settings you want. each new my site created will now pick up those settings.

BUT this has to be done before sites are created!!!

you *cannot* recursively do this for existing sites through the Admin UI - you'd need to code a utility to "fix" existing sites.

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

Mmm strange...  that is exactly what I have done. I then logged in with a new user account and created their mysite but still it defaults to US. I have since tried it on another MOSS environment with a new user and that also still defaults to US.

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

very strange, this should not be the case - just verified it on a couple environments - I will investigate further and post back...

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

    Hi..

I'm getting the same problem... I've changed the Web App Time Zone, but the default locale for all mysites created thereafter still seem to default to US...

    Any ideas??

    Aj..

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

I've not managed to resolve this yet. Users are just setting their own regional settings for their mysite currently.

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

Another option (but has a cost) is to use the Quest site admin tool for sharepoint. Apart from the reporting, it also has a policy aspects which can be used to enforce settings on sub sites etc. It's kind of like AD group policy for sharepoint.

I know it does regional settings, but not 100% sure if that also covers mysites. I think it also does new and existing sites too.

Down site is the tool is not web based, which is a shame and a surprise considering sharepoint admin is web based!

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

I was talking about this very subject yesterday with someone who had looked into it, and the conclusion rightly or wrongly was that you had to install the UK language pack.  If you had any extended webs, they would have to be unextended (deleted) and re-etended to take the new language option.

I can't confirm this, but it does seem a credible answer to the problem, if a somewhat longwinded one.

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

    Hey John

    Thanks for replying...

I cant seem to find a seperate download for the UK, is it the 2007 Office System Language Packs for SharePoint Server 2007, Forms Server 2007, Project Server 2007, and SharePoint Server 2007 for Search? found here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2447426b-8689-4768-bff0-cbb511599a45&displaylang=en

I've researched a load of blogs, but all roads seem to point back here... I'm hoping the UK specfic pack is included...

    Thanks... ;o)

    Aj...

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

We have not been able to locate a UK language pack...and can confirm that altering the root site collection locale does not force UK locale for new site collections based on that root collection.  The site templates are in US English locale so all new sites will still use those templates unless you have a UK language option installed.

I cannot either find a UK language pack.  Seems we have a little problem here!

Re: Setting default locale for Mysites

There is no UK language pack - this does not exist, nor is it planned.

The workaround until a fix is delivered, is for users to set thier regional settings (using the My Settings link) before creating thier MySite (which is a site collection in it's own right - hence why it doesn't pick it up from the root).

    s.
