Good Morning, I am new to the forum and have entered such with a challenging question.

We are a Local Authority using sharepoint 2003 as our content, document management / intranet solution (operational for past 2 years), but just very recently have hit a serious problem where we are unable to delete any sharepoint workspaces created, document libraries, lists or sites.

Such is the seriousness of the above we have an ongoing call logged with Microsoft who to date have carried a course of recommended action, remote dial in etc following SPSreports sent to them but to no avail! ....we are still unable to delete and have made no progress.

Is there anybody in the user community who has encountered this problem. I enclose below the error that sharepoint returns at any level within the SP environment.

Hi,

The first thing to check is what changed in your environment at the time that the fault started to occur.  For example:

- were service packs or hot fixes applied at any part of the environment: SharePoint, SQL Server, Windows Server.

- network configuration changes (routers, firewalls)

It may well be that some reconfiguration has caused the probelm.  You should also check the event logs on all servers (web and SQL), as well as the SharePoint logs contained within the Diagnostic section of the Central Administration site.

Without more detail around these items, it would be difficult to say what could have started the problem.

Thanks for reiterating what could be stated the obvious. I am not the overall sharepoint administrator but when our SP administrator gets back he'll re-visit some of the pointers you have raised. I'm sure event logs have been consulted at

One thing that has been bugging all of us, is why we seem to not be able to search for documents within private sites (workspaces), however at the top tier of sharepouint evironment providing you have the permissions, and correct security access to the sites of the document libraries information (ie docs etc) are returned at this level. This to the business is a key floor in the application?.

Any clues or setup tips or things to check would be appreciated.

In response to your search question.

SPS (Portal) provides enhanced search and indexing features that allow you to search across the portal, WSS sites and other content such as web sites and file shares.   When searching at the top level (i.e. in the Portal) this search is used.  however

WSS does not use this search out of the box and you are using thge SQL Full Text search that searches just the site you are on.   This has been corrected in 2007/v3 but for WSS v2 you need to change the WSS sites to use the SPS search,  these links should help you

The same delete issue has recently appeared on our SharePoint 2003 installation.

Has anyone figured this out?

I have seen something quite similar to this, where attempting to delete anything that included document libraries failed (I think the user was left looking at a blank page in IE).

The problem was that they had the SharePoint Recycle Bin ISAPI filter installed, and the location they were using to store the RecycleBin's copy of the deleted documents etc. had run out of disk space.

If you are using the Recycle Bin, I suggest looking into its log files to see if it is encountering any errors.  Other then that, check the SharePoint logs and the Event log for any suspicious errors.
