    Export Import error

    Hi All,

Trying to move some sites around from one site collection into another, so I'm using stsadm -o export.....command and exporting each site into a .cmp file.

Then creating a blank site in the tartget site collection and run the stsadm -o import command. All completes without error.

When I compare the data in the two sites, it doesn't match. Lots of Docs missing from the import, lists are only partial. Have tried with the -version 4 switch because some of the sites have versioning with the same result.

Anyone else seen this and know a workround? can I use Backup/Restore as an alternative and point the restoe to a new location? I've not tried it this way. Help!

    Re: Export Import error

    Hi Mike

I use backup and restore quite succesfully to move full site collections but haven't tried with single sites within a collection. From the technet instructions on -o restore the options are only for full farm or site collection. Sorry I can't be much more help but interested to see what solution you come up with as this is something I need to try in the future

    Re: Export Import error

Will try this out, but what I'm going to do is bring the system on line in a VM private network, run the backup, and then take the backup files out into the Live environment and try and restore.

The data I'm after is not in the live, but is available in the VM version from Thursday night. As the Export Import is failing, I need to try another method of recovery. Commvault (Simpana 7) is also missing data, so all in all it's being a real pain.

If I can run the backup on the VM site, copy out the backup files and restore into the Live, then this will do for now.

Re: Export Import error - Fixed

    Hi all,

what appears to be happening is, of the 70 sites I needed to move, 9 of them has Doc Libaries which had used folders within folders within folders just like folks used to do in the old files system for storing docs. The other 61 all had meta data and had been using Categories and had views created to organise the Documents either within one Doc library or in to two or three as the project required.

all the fialures are in the Folder/Folder/Folder sites. although Export and import report no issues, the docs are just not there. Even simpana 7 (upgrading to 8.1 next week) can see the data in this folder structure, but the restore doesn't always work, if you rebuild all the folder structures exactly as they were before, then you seem to have a chance with the restore from simpana backup.

Lucky we have VM, recovered the server from the snap I took 1 hour before starting work into a private network along with a DC and PC, and jsut extracted all the Docs from the affected sites, deleted the Doc lib contents in the live, move the PC from private to live network, and copied the Docs complete with crappy folder structure back into the sites. Took a while to work all this out and get the VM's built and all the other sites validated, but it worked! Now all I need to do is get those 9 sites sorted out with some Categores and new Doc Libs.

Phew! that was a busy week, but we learned soooooo much which we hope to never have to use again.

Interesting, folder within folders within folders are always bad news.

It's one of those problems we had a few years ago, and thought we had got past it with education, but you get the odd user who just doesn't like to use metadata or use categories within the Doc libs and so reverts back to the old explorer view and then creats an endless stream of folders.

Well they now have to setup new Doc libraries and get all theri docs reorganised. :-)
