    I have reported this to Microsoft support, and they confirm it is a known issue with workflow alerts.

    They have promised to get me a resolution and, if/when they do, I will post it here.

    Microsoft have now confirmed that this is a known issue with no current resolution.

    They are working on a hot fix, but it has no known release date.
