Removing a content type does not remove it where it is being used

    Hi,

I ran accross this behaviour and wonder if you guys had the same :

    - I have a Content Type "Column X" on a top site http://company/mydepartment

    - this "Column X" is used in many sub-site like /mydeparment/sub1, /mydeparment/sub2..

    - when I update the ContentType from the top site the changes is propagated immediately to al sub-sites,

    - however if I REMOVE this ContentType it doesn't remove it from the sub-site lists but it will just cut the inheritance.

Therefore  i will have to go to EACH sub-sites and remove the Column myself.

Is there something I am missing or should Sharepoint offer the option to remove Content Type from the placeholder too ?

This is the correct behaviour to ensure that you don't lose important data. Imagine if you had a content type that was linked to 40 or 50 libraries and an overzealous admin removed the content type!! Ouch.. loads of lost data.

I kind of agree with that, however they should be an option to force the action on all sub-sites..

Since non-responsible should not (in theory) have access to Site Settings and content-type options.

any way to remove columns programmatically on all sites ? (I have 40 sites using the same content type , so am trying to reduce the clicks ..;-)

    thanks
