Sharepoint - restoring a site from backup of mdf and ldf files - how?

    Hi,

We need to recover some SharePoint website content ont to a Windows Server 2003 server. We have a fresh newly installed SharePoint site on the server and we have the mdf and ldf files from a backup.

    Note we have tried:

Removed the new database created on our system from the SharePoint Central Administration and then adding the backed up one. using Sharepoint central administration but get the following error:

"SharePoint_Config_507ea1f4-2140-41e0-a804-bd1ed7 on Server\Microsoft##SSEE contains user-defined schema. Databases must be empty before they can be used. Delete all of the tables, stored procedures and other objects or use a different database."

    1) What is the best way to go about recovering?
    2) Our there tools to extract information form the files?
    3) Does anyone know how we can fix our error on the method we have tried?

    Many thanks in advance.

The cause may be that the backup was taken from a farm at a different service pack than the one your are attempting to restore to, hence the schema change. If you don't know what service pack the old farm was at then you'll have to work through them until you've found the one you need.
