    Intranet Homepage

    Hi,

I am new to the SUG. I work in an educational institution and we use SharePoint for all document storage as well as the staff intranet. We are currently looking to re-launch the intranet, following a business wide roll out of SP. Any comments, feedback or suggestions for a successful SharePoint Intranet Homepage would be very welcome.

    Thanks!

    Re: Intranet Homepage

Wow - that's a pretty open ended question.

Depends if it's an intranet portal for SharePoint sites or whether it serves as an organisation wide intranet.

In my experience a useful organisation intranet homepage is one that essentially acts as a launchpad for easy access to sites/services that a user either needs/or is looking for. Having search capability right there is a must.

Some organisations I've worked for want all the bells and whistles on that first page, the CEO's blog, a corporate/organasational newsfeed, company wide announcements for example, access to the internal directory.

If it's purely a SharePoint intranet it usually is quite generic, with the pointers to all the ket top level sites available.

    good luck!

    Very open open question....!

You really need to do a proper requirements gathering workshop to determine this. A workshop with the stakeholders can shape this.

PM me if you would some tips on this.

I'm very much in agreement with Lee, The user requirements gathering stage of any Intranet project can make or break your project at the start.

Having a good working group from all areas of the business is a good idea as it's important to not have the intranet feeling like an IT lead project.. It should be led by the business and have a major stakeholder (preferably Non IT department) willing to push those resistant areas of the business.

    Re: Intranet Homepage

    Well,

Implementing an intranet and configuring it to deliver information must be the beginning of a phased approach that will transform the intranet to be a business tool for the organization. Applications and utilities should be implemented that would promote individual level, team level, departmental level and organizational level process automation. Moreover, Extranets should work together with the Intranets to provide and extended Enterprise which reaches out to the customers, partners etc.

SharePoint can be a single platform that can be extended to provide collaboration and business applications that can not only cater to the employee requirements, but also to the collaboration requirements of customers, partners etc. via an extranet.
