Problem:
Was looking to save a subsite as a template (never did this before in SPS 2003 as I always preferred site definition files) and could not find it anywhere on the 'look and feel' menu - looks like it is only available when you are on the top level site.

Solution:
No problem!

• Go to the top level site and from the 'look and feel' menu save the site as a template: check the URL: http://yoursite/_layouts/savetmpl.aspx, copy the _/layouts/savetmpl.aspx to your clipboard.
• Now go to your subsite and paste it to the end of your subsite address (removing 'default.aspx' of course), for example: http://yoursite/yoursubsite/_layouts/savetmpl.aspx.

Done.
