  • User Group Golf Day - Ullesthorpe July 10th - Leicestershire

Hi all , In July we will be hosting a user group evening at Ullesthorpe ( Leicestershire ) when Bill English & Todd Bleeker are over. However we thought it would be fun to have a golf day during the afternoon as Ullesthorpe has its own 18 golf course attached to the hotel http://www.bw-ullesthorpecourt.co.uk/BargainGolfDays.asp . We have 25 spaces free for people wishing to take part in the event and I am going to see if we can get some of the vendors from the User Group sponsoring a prize or two as well as hopefully attend ( step forward vendors !! ) as we will also be hosting a nearest the pin and longest drive competition. The cost for the afternoon's Golf is £26.50 per person including food.

Skill is not important it is a fun day out and then in the evening we can all enjoy the User Group event.

The first Tee times are confirmed for Midday so assume to arrive at Ullesthorpe around 11am to enjoy the pre golf snacks and drink :) , we will finish approx. 5.30pm in time to relax for an hour before the evening user group sessions start.

If you are interested in confirming your slot please post your comment here and send a cheque for £ 26.50 made payable to Combined Knowledge Ltd to 2 The Terrace , Rugby Road, Lutterworth, Leicestershire, LE174BW to confirm your place. I need confirmations and payments no later than the 30th of May as that is when we confirm the final numbers.

If you wish to book a room at the hotel please contact me ASAP as the chances are the rooms will be booked up very soon as we are running two courses that week as well.

    Any other questions just ask

  • Fancy Having a go at becoming Speaker Idle ??

Microsoft are looking for canditates to take part in a Speaker Idle competition at the upcoming Launch event of Visual Studio 2008, SQL 2008 and Server 2008

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/heroeshappenhere/default.mspx

    "Ready Steady Speak!"

"Ready Steady Speak!" is a mini Speaker Idol in which the contestants have been given predefined subjects to speak on for 5 mins in front of a panel of judges.  There will be 3 categories: VS2008, SQL2008 and Windows Server 2008.  We want to give your members an opportunity to speak at a major event rather than have recognised community speakers.  So spread the word that there is an opportunity to a learn about the new products by giving a short Community talk at the Launch, with a chance to win a great prize too!  Hosts and Judges will be in conflict over who is the best, so watch out for some banter and controversy!

In terms of numbers, we need about 4 Dev volunteers and 4 IT Pro volunteers to ensure we have a full competition. So far we’ve 2 volunteers for Dev presentations and one probable for IT Pro, so we spread the word out there to your members, particularly those active ones who may have dabbled in speaking and want an opportunity to have a crack at a large event.  Excellent prizes up for grabs as well as accolades !!

If you are interested please contact dave@nxtgenug.net

  • Newcastle meeting Roundup

Thanks to everyone for attending the meeting at Newcastle last week. We had 40 people and I hope everyone found the sessions useful. I found it very interesting that out of all the attendees no company had yet installed an Anti Virus on their SharePoint system. I think I will repeat this session in London in the near future.

A for Penny's talk we had the extra surprse of Penny giving away Her new MS Press SharePoint Designer Step by Step http://mindsharpblogs.com/penny/archive/2008/01/20/4184.aspx

As I mentioned in the meeting we really want some suggestions for what you would all like to cover in future meetings and we can then start to organise them. To get the ball started :

    - To have an open round table discussion on best practices for Design and implementation.

  • 64 bit only for VNext ; For those planning SharePoint Servers now

You may be interested to know that Microsoft have now made it official that the next version of SharePoint will be released on 64 bit only. So if you have the choice today and you think that upgrading may be something you would do in the lifespam of that server then you may want to test 64 bit now. The Devil is in the detail but look to step 5 http://blogs.msdn.com/joelo/archive/2007/12/17/12-things-to-do-over-the-holidays.aspx
